If you’re trying to find more patients online, you’ve probably thought about whether Instagram is a good platform to focus your efforts. It’s become a really popular social media app, especially since it was acquired by Facebook. For dental social media marketing, we think Instagram is a great choice for several big reasons!

Instagram and Dental Social Media Marketing

Yes, Instagram is a photo sharing app, but it’s actually so much more than that. Instagram is a social media platform dedicated to sharing photos and video that dental practices can use to showcase the personality and the people behind brand, educate patients, and market their business.

The first thing you should do is make sure your bio is on point. You only get 250 characters to make sure you’re giving enough information about who you are so people can decide whether or not to follow. You also want to show your fun side a little bit, because Instagram is a social platform and if you’re not there to have fun, you might be missing the point!

In addition to a really great bio and a regular posting routine, there are some best practices that you should know about when to post, how to measure your success, and how to engage with your followers to grow your presence even further. We share more information on these topics in a past blog post. You can check it out here!

The Nitty Gritty of Instagram for Dentists

Of course, the first thing you need to run a great dental social media marketing campaign on Instagram is a killer photo. That’s the biggest chance you have to grab people’s attention. Once you have them, you can use the caption field to share your knowledge, give people some surprising information, or just make them smile. A good dental social media marketing strategy has a mix of approaches in both the caption and the image.

Hashtags are also the big differentiator between Instagram and apps like Facebook or Snapchat. While those platforms are great for other reasons, they are not great when it comes to hashtags. On Instagram, you can use up to 30 hashtags per post. It is important to choose the right ones that will both get you in more people’s feeds and also target the RIGHT people. For some brands, just reaching the most people is a good enough strategy, but for dental social media marketing, it’s so important to get in front of people that can actually become patients (and ambassadors) of your practice.

Going Beyond the Post

Posting regularly is important, and remembering to choose a combination of professional-quality images, intentional captions, and targeted keywords is key. However, that’s not all that Instagram has to offer. We don’t want to overwhelm you if you’re just getting started, but Instagram also has a few other amazing tools like Instagram Stories and IGTV. We will be doing an IGTV challenge in the coming weeks, so please stay tuned to our Instagram page to watch for announcements on that if you’re interested in learning how that amazing tool works!
