First, Clear Out Your Current Instagram Bio

Since Instagram allows for a limited number of characters, it is best to start with a fresh slate and empty your bio area. And yes, that may mean saying goodbye to your favorite coffee flavor and random emojis! #losethefluff

The very first thing you’re going to do is consider who you want to target with your practice’s Instagram account. This might seem basic, but it’s a step a lot of people miss. This will help you to determine which pain points you want to work into your bio so you can position yourself as an authority that can offer real solutions to their problems.

Who Is This Account For?

The first thing you want people to see is WHO you are able to help. Be crystal clear so you can grow a healthy following made up of your target audience. For example: if you are a pediatric dentists, it is MUCH more beneficial to have 400 local moms following you versus 5,000 random people who don’t have kids or aren’t in your geographic area.

What Are Their Main Pain Points?

Consider the top struggles of your target audience in relation to the dental services you offer. Speak to your audience directly by defining their pain points and then addressing them in your Instagram bio.

For example, our target market struggles with knowing what kind of content to post, when to post, and how to grow followers that engage and convert to book appointments. We want to help dental professionals save time in their business, grow followers, and gain patients. If you’re a pediatric dentist, you might identify your audience’s pain points to be finding a dentist who is both great at working with kids and who offers some flexible hours. 

Position Yourself As Their Solution

Who You Are

Now that you’ve zeroed in on your target audience’s pain point(s), it’s time to explain to them who you are.

Doing this will help them better understand exactly how you can help them. There is nothing worse than losing a potential new patient just because your bio is lacking the information they need to hit that “follow” button. Remember that you only have about 10 seconds to make a quick impression!

How Can You Help Them

Let the reader know exactly how you can help them. Leave no room for doubt.

For example, you might say something like this in your bio:

🦷 Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist
📍 Hyde Park, Chicago
💗 We Love Kids + Teens!
📅 Flexible Schedules

This is not only visually dynamic, it addresses the pain points we menioned previously and gives people the info they need to hit follow and ultimately, convert into a patient!

Humanize Your Account

Connect with your audience and further build their trust. Even just a few playful words can let them know there is a human behind the scenes. Just make sure that the words you use are descriptive and true to your brand. In the example above, we put “We Love Kids + Teens” which is informative, but also fun and playful. People can tell that this isn’t a stuffy, boring corporate dental office. It’s a kid-friendly dental practice!

Provide A Call To Action

The last thing you’re going to want to do is add a call to action to your bio. Often when we look at dentist’s Instagram bios, the first thing we will notice is they either have a weak call to action or no call to action at all. As Neil Patel says:

“One of the main reasons why most landing pages and sales pages are not converting leads into customers is a weak call to action with no sense of urgency.”

A typical call to action for a dentist might be something like this:

Here’s the example bio with a call to action added in:

Include Your Website

Most importantly, do not forget to link your website to your Instagram bio. The good news is your website URL does not count toward the character limit that Instagram gives you for your bio. If you feel limited by the single url option we highly recommend to share multiple links via your Instagram bio. It is not only easy to use, but it’s free as well!

Bonus Tip – What To Do If You Run Out Of Space

Let’s say you have crafted the perfect Instagram bio on paper and now you’re excitedly typing it into your profile only to find that you have exceeded Instagram’s character limit. What should you do?  The answer: Condense. When appropriate, opt for emojis. If you’re still hurting for room, refine your content until you have condensed the bio down to work within Instagram’s limits.
